The Pet Owner Cup HolderBy Steadi Labs

A base for the cushion, not a suction cup for the table

Every no-spill cup needs a smooth, solid surface. A couch is not one.

That is not our claim about them — it is their claim about themselves. Mighty Mug: it “grips to any smooth and solid surface such as your table, desk”. Toadfish: “simply place the Tumbler on any smooth surface”. Every tip-proof cup on the market works by suction, and suction needs something a cushion cannot give it.

This does not use suction. It is a 5.2-inch moulded base that works by width, which is why it works on the one surface your dog is actually on.

On a table, buy the Mighty Mug. It is $20 and it works.

The tip-proof aisle is genuinely good and genuinely cheap, and on a hard table it does exactly what it says. If your problem is a cat on a dining table, you can stop reading and go buy one. What none of them can do is a couch — and their own product copy is where that limit is written down.

Mighty Mug Barware

smooth and solid

“Grips to any smooth and solid surface such as your table, desk.” Airlock suction. On a table this is the right buy and it costs less than we do.

Toadfish 20 oz tumbler

“To use simply place the Tumbler on any smooth surface.” Their can cooler’s own copy names the threat by name: “wagging dog tails”.

Paw.com throw

accepts the spill

The incumbent answer to a dog on a couch is to protect the couch: a waterproof throw against “dog hair, dirt, spills and scratching”. A different, reasonable strategy.

Or the cushion

$14.95

no suction

A 5.2-inch base that works by width, not grip. It is the only one of these four that does anything at all on upholstery.

Who this is actually for

Sixty-five million dog households, and the dog is on the sofa.

  • Dogs outnumber cats by about forty per cent

APPA’s national survey puts it at 65.1 million dog-owning US households against 46.5 million cat-owning. This page leads on the dog because the numbers do.

  • And the pet is family, which is why it has the furniture

Pew: 97% of US pet owners say their pets are part of the family, and 62% of Americans own one. Nobody is going to start keeping the dog off the couch, and this page is not going to suggest it.

  • A drinkware brand already names the cause

Toadfish’s own product copy: “From a lack of cup holders on a rocking boat to wagging dog tails, this product will keep your drink upright.” A tail at cushion height is a designed-for hazard in this category.

  • The whole tip-proof aisle is one mechanism

Suction. Mighty Mug, Toadfish, and the tip-proof dog bowls too. It is a good mechanism and it needs a hard smooth surface to work on, which is the one thing a sofa cushion is definitionally not.

A hand sliding an aluminium can down into the fins of a Steadi.
No suction cup. Nothing to press down onto anything.

Does it actually work

It wobbles. Then it settles.

A dog lands on the cushion beside it and the foam re-shapes under both of them. The base is 5.2 inches across, so the drink and the base move as one piece and come back level instead of heeling over.

Filmed on a couch cushion — which on this page is not a caveat. It is the surface the whole argument is about.

Real footage, one take, no cuts.

How it holds

Width, and nothing else.

The base

5.2 inches across and fixed. It moves the edge the drink would have to tip over much further out, so the whole thing has to lean much further before it goes.

The fins

Six of them, holding the bottom inch. Cans and bottles slide on from the top; tumblers and glasses drop in. Drink and base then rock as one piece.

Not suction

There is no cup, no airlock and nothing to press down. That is a real trade: on a hard smooth table a suction base grips harder than this does. On foam it grips nothing at all, and this still works.

The flare, close. That width is the entire mechanism.

Several sizes of can standing in Steadis side by side, from a slim can to a tallboy.
Slim can to tallboy. Bases between two and three inches all seat.

What seats and what does not

Bases between two and three inches. Measure the bottom, not the rim.

A standard 12 oz can is 2.6 inches across the bottom. A Stanley Quencher 40 oz is 3.1 and seats snug. A mug with a handle does not seat at all — the handle lands exactly where the fins grip, and the morning coffee is the drink most often knocked over, so that is worth knowing now.

Search by container

Every width below comes from a published specification, not from us. Where a spec is uncertain, the answer says so.

Or the width across the bottom

A width across the bottom of the cup, in inches.

Without a tape measure

A standard sticky note is three inches square. A cup standing on one with its base inside the paper will seat.

Anything borderline — hello@steadilabs.com reaches a person, and the answer will be honest either way, including a no.

Where they end up

The cushion, the ottoman, the arm of the chair, the floor.

Wherever the animal is, which is wherever you are. The cushion beside you, the ottoman your feet are on, a flat chair arm, and the floor next to the sofa when somebody is sitting down there with the dog.

Twelve colours, one per unit — and on this door the honest reason is that people buy a second one for the room the dog is banned from and then find it is not.

What the aisle costs

Two of these are cheaper. Both need a hard table.

Prices were looked up on 3 September 2026, not estimated. Every requirement below is quoted from the seller’s own product copy.

The productPriceWhat it needs, in its own words
Mighty Mug Barware pint$20.00“Grips to any smooth and solid surface such as your table, desk.” Airlock suction.
Mighty Mug Jr, 16 oz with straw$24.99“The suction base prevents the cup from tipping over, even when it’s knocked or bumped.”
Toadfish universal can cooler$25.00SmartGrip suction. Its own copy names the hazard: “wagging dog tails”. Four-pack $88.00.
Toadfish non-tipping 20 oz tumbler$30.00“Simply place the Tumbler on any smooth surface.”
Paw.com PupProtector waterproof throw$99.00Nothing — it protects the furniture instead of the drink. A different strategy, and a sound one.
The Pet Owner Cup Holder$14.95 · four for $39.95, $9.99 eachA surface. Any surface, including a cushion, because it does not grip anything.

If the animal in question is a cat and the surface is a table, buy the Mighty Mug. It is $20, it is genuinely tip-proof on a hard top, and it will beat this. The whole reason this page exists is the sofa, where suction has nothing to hold and every product above is out of the running.

From people who bought one

All four of these name an animal.

I have a tendency to spill my drinks and have two cats. This is one of the best things I’ve ever impulse bought. It works. It actually works. It’s a heavy, wide enough base that it is actually stable. My “spot” in the living room is near a somewhat-cushioned fabric ottoman, which is where I usually put my drinks. It’s totally stable on this cushioned surface.

They are great! They work very well in keeping the soda cans from falling over and spilling on the bed & couch when the three Beagles and one Border Collie jump on or off. They also stay steady on the little wobbly patio table outside.

★★★★★

This is such a fantastic idea that is very well done. We have a deep couch and 3 dogs who love to jump on it. I have tried so many trays and holders, and none of them have worked. But with my Steadi, Ican lay back on the lounger part, have my drink in arms reach, and not worry about the dogs knocking it over. My husband was skeptical, but even he is now impressed. This thing is GREAT!

This stability sleeve product is great. Really stabilizes your drink container and eliminates the chance of kids or pets accidentally knocking the drink over. Ordered a 2 pack to see how well it works. Will order more to give to family at Christmas

Questions

Straight answers.

Why not just buy a tip-proof cup?

If your surface is a hard table, do — the Mighty Mug is $20 and it is excellent. Every one of them works by suction and says so in its own copy, and a sofa cushion gives suction nothing to hold. That is the gap this fills.

Will it really stand on a cushion?

Yes. The base is 5.2 inches across and fixed, so it spreads across the foam rather than pressing into it at a point, and the drink and the base then move as one piece when a dog lands beside it.

Is a spilled drink dangerous to my pet?

Not usually, and we are not going to pretend otherwise to sell you something. The Pet Poison Helpline says a lick or two of coffee, tea or soda is unlikely to poison most pets. If your animal has actually drunk something, call your vet.

What about my coffee mug?

Straight no — the handle lands where the fins grip. That is the most common disappointment on this page, because coffee is the drink most often knocked over.

Can they knock it off the table?

Yes. It is 3.6 ounces of rubber, not an anchor. It makes the drink much harder to tip; it does not make it immovable.

Will it damage the sofa?

It marks nothing and lifts clean. No adhesive, no suction, no hardware — it is one piece of rubber standing on the fabric.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

Yes. Shore 85A TPU, 100% BPA free, one piece with nothing to come apart. Top rack or bottom.

Why does this site only sell one thing?

Because it is one thing. It is a Steadi, made by Steadi Labs in Orange, California, and checkout finishes at steadilabs.com where the company lives.

Still deciding

$14.95 when a Mighty Mug is $20.

And on a table the Mighty Mug is the better product. This is cheaper and it is the only one that does anything on a cushion. Different surfaces, different answers.

I already have a waterproof throw.

Then the couch is handled and the drink is not. The throw catches what goes over; this makes going over less likely. They stack rather than compete.

Won’t the dog just chew it?

It is Shore 85A TPU, which is tough, but it is rubber and a determined chewer will get through anything. It is not a chew toy and we would not sell it as one. Ninety days covers finding out.

Will it look like a pet product?

No. It is a matte moulded base in twelve colours with no branding readable across a room. Nothing on it says pet, which is deliberate — it lives on your coffee table.

Suction needs a hard surface. Your dog is on the soft one.

For the cushion, the ottoman and the arm of the chair — wherever the animal actually is.
